Loss by Fire of the Steamer Katy Reid - Loss and Insurance
From the Bay City Tribune of last evening we learn that the steamer Katy Reid, owned by Geo. Campbell of Bay City , and engaged in transferring logs from the shore to the mills on the river was totally destroyed by fire while lying at Staudacher's dock at Salzburg, about 2 o'clock Thursday morning. The REID Wednesday evening at 10 o'clock arrived in with a raft of logs which she towed to the Wooden Ware Works in the Seventh ward, and then went to Staudacher's dock in Salzburg to wood up. About midnight the crew retired - everything about the boat being in its usual order. About 3 o'clock they awoke to discover the craft enveloped in flames. Such a headway had the fire gained that one of the crew was obliged to jump from the boat minus his clothing - he not having time to get pants, coats, boots or even a hat. Of course, all attempts to save the boat were futile, and she burned to the water's edge. The Reid was valued at $12,000, and was insured for $7,000 - $6,00o of which was taken in companies represented by Ralph Crable, and the balance in companies represented by Knaggs & Shannon. The origin of the fire cannot even be conjectured, as the employees of the boat are positive that everything was in perfect order when they retired for the night.
