A LAKE SCHOONER CONDEMNED
Chicago Times: On yesterday the collector of customs received a letter from the treasury department, inclosing a dispatch from the United States consul at Teneriffe, one of the Canary Islands, stating that the lake schooner G. G. Cooper had been seized, condemned as unseaworthy and sold at that port. The Cooper left this port on the 13th day of June, 1878, and proceed to Michigan City, where she loaded a cargo of hardwood lumber for Liverpool. She then went to Pentwater and finished out with deals for the same port, and sailed for her foreign destination the latter part of June. She reached Liverpool in good shape, and after discharging her cargo she was chartered for coal to the Cape of Good Hope. On her way to that port she encountered a gale, which injured her somewhat, and she put into Cadiz, Spain. While there the authorities took cognizance of her condition, and she was condemned as unseaworthy. Being informed of the schooner's trouble, Capt. William F. Higgie of this city, her owner, sailed for Liverpool and thence to Cadiz to look after his craft. She was finally released, having been repaired; and her owner succeeded in chartering her for a cargo of coal to South America. He saw her set sail in charge of Capt. Frank H. Higgie, who was with her when she left here, and then started home, arriving about six weeks ago. Since that time he has heard nothing of the schooner until the information of the trouble as given above. The Cooper was a well-built schooner of 310 tons burthen, and was built at Madison dock in 1862 by Baileys. She received new decks in 1871 and was regarded as a fair vessel.
