REVENUE CUTTER MICHIGAN BADLY SCRAPED IN ERIE.
Ore Carrier MAURICE B. GROVER Struck the Cutter's Bow a Glancing Blow Under Full Head of Steam.
Bowsprit, Forecastle and Bulkhead Wrecked.
Erie, Pa., July 16. -- While lying at her dock in this port yesterday, the veteran warship MICHIGAN was run into by the big ore carrier MAURICE B. GROVER of the M.A. Bradley fleet. The GROVER was moving under a full head of steam. She struck the bow of the MICHIGAN a glancing blow and then poked her nose in between the ship and the dock, carrying away the hawsers and shoving the smaller craft 200 yards down the harbor.
The MICHIGAN had her bowsprit, forecastle and forward bulkhead wrecked and she was scraped and bruised along the entire port side. The six pound Driggs-Schroeder rifles of the rear port battery were bent out of true and a whole boat on the port davits was demolished. The MICHIGAN returned to her dock under her own steam. She was not injured below the water line. Lieutenant Commander Winder estimates the damage at from $10,000 to $15,000. Repairs will keep the ship in port for several months and will necessitate a change of plans for Admiral Taylor and the committee, which has in charge the selection of a site for the Naval Training Station to be located on the Great Lakes. The committee expected to cruise from port to port on the MICHIGAN. Captain C.R. Baker of the GROVER places the responsibility for the collision upon Second Engineer James Murray. The Captain was bringing his boat in toward a fueling dock near the MICHIGAN berth and signaled to reverse the engines. Instead Murray gave full speed ahead and maintained it for several minutes. The GROVER was uninjured.
