Sault Ste. Marie, May 9. -- The most disastrous collision in the Soo Passage for two years occurred this morning at the foot of Little Lake George. The steel steamer S.S. CURRY, bound down, ore laden, and the whaleback steamer A.D. THOMPSON, bound up without a cargo, came together with a tremendous crash at 6 o'clock. The bow of the CURRY was crushed in and her forward compartment is full of water, although the steamer has not sunk. Her damages are estimated at about $30,000. She will be able to proceed after lightering about 300 tons.
The THOMPSON was struck on the port side about 20 feet from her stem and is more seriously damaged than the CURRY. Her nose is knocked all out of shape and she has been run aground. The lighter MENTOR has gone to the assistance of the two steamers. The CURRY is owned by H.A. Hawgood of Cleveland and is fully insured, It is thought the whaleback has no insurance.
