The Maritime History of the Great Lakes
Oswego Commercial Times (Oswego, NY), 9 Dec 1850

Full Text

The lake commerce of Oswego is large, and not infrequently thirty to forty arrivals occur in a day during the busy season, bringing among their freight 30,000 barrels of flour and 100,000 bushels of wheat. Two weeks since, in a walk along the docks below the bridge, on the river, 130 vessels were counted.

Among them three steamboats, five propellers, a number of brigs, and the balance large lake schooners. The duties, it is thought, will reach nearly half a million dollars this season.
