Death of Capt. David Dall

Chicago, October 17. - [Special] - Capt. David Dall, the well known vessel owner and lake captain, died at his residence at 4 o'clock this morning. During the prevalence of la grippe* last winter, Capt. Dall was attacked by the disease and never recovered. The immediate cause of his death was Bright's disease.** His death was peaceful and without pain. Capt. Dall has followed the life of a sailor since he was 14 years old. He was born in Newberry, Scotland, July 7, 1822, and in 1836 was apprenticed as a sailor on a Scottish sea-going vessel. He followed the life on a number of salt water ships and has been all over the world. In 1849 he visited New Orleans. The cholera raged there in that year and he was one of its victims. His strong constitution conquered, and that same year he came north to Racine with his wife and family. A visit was paid to Chicago, and he became impressed with this growing town, and concluded to settle here. Six months after their arrival he became skipper of a sailing vessel, the Glenn Acken, owned by Mr. Camfield, then a prominent vessel owner. He afterwards became captain of the Cherokee, same owner, and soon after sailed on the Whirlwind, a vessel in which he owned a half interest. The largest sailing vessel on the lakes was the Ellen Parker. He was captain of that vessel when, on the day that President Buchanan was elected, she was run into by another boat and sunk. The last vessel upon which he sailed was the schooner Advance. This was twenty-five years ago. Since that time he has owned a great number of vessels. He has lost ten altogether since he has sailed the lakes. He leaves six grown children and a widow. He was a Free Mason and a member of the Corinthian Chapter, Covenant Lodge. He was a member of the Knights Templar.

Capt. Dall's first command was GLYNN ACOR - the spelling has various permutations - a 65-ton schooner built at Racine in 1849 and possibly lost at Chicago in 1853 (thanks to Brendon Baillod for information on this obscure vessel). The brig ELLEN PARKER of 333 tons was apparently lost in November 1857 (exact date would be a guess - Buchanan lost the popular vote on Nov. 4 and was officially declared the victor by the Electoral College sometime later). *la grippe - influenza **Bright's disease - kidney failure
