A Marine Disaster
The Tug Conqueror Sunk in the Narrows and in Bad Shape– The Crew Safe.

Capt. Chas. Read of the Schooner L.B. Stone, which arrived at this port at two o’clock this afternoon from Brockville, brought information that the iron wrecking tug Conqueror, owned by Folger Brothers of Kingston, was sunk and lying in bad shape in the Lower Narrows, St. Lawrence river at the head of Rock Island. Capt. Read says the Conqueror was on her way up the river with the schooner Pride of America, in tow, bound for Oswego with a cargo of rye. She struck the reef Monday night at 9:30 and immediately sank in deep water. Capt. Read passed her yesterday afternoon about two o’clock and says she is in bad shape with only a portion of her stack visible. Her crew escaped to the island, and were still there yesterday. The schooner was compelled to run back to Brockville after the sinking of the Conqueror, and Capt. Read, says it was reported she also met with a mishap. The tug lies in American waters, and an application has been made to have a Canadian tug go to her relief. A protest has been entered against this. The Conqueror was an iron boat and was built in Scotland. It will be remembered that she was tied up at this port last season for an infringement of the custom laws.
