1840 THE NEWS, KINGSTON Vol. I, No. I missing The Prospectus for a new paper called the News appeared in the Chronicle & Gazette on Sept. 12th, 1840. Run by Messrs. S. & J. Rowlands, it planned on emphasizing the marine side of Kingston's economy by publishing a Shipping List. On October 31st the Chronicle & Gazette had the following: "The News - The first number of this very handsome sheet, made its appearance in this place on Thursday. It is published by our fellow townsmen Messrs. S. & J. Rowlands. It contains much useful and entertaining matter, and is the largest newspaper perhaps in British North America. We wish the Messrs. Rowlands much success, and from what we know of them personally, we feel assured that their publication will always be respectably conducted." This indicates that the first issue appeared on Thursday, Oct. 29th, 1840. Since no issues have been found from 1840 or 1841, articles copied from the News by other newspapers have been included.
