The first of the new line of Royal Mail steamers, for Lake Ontario, was launched from the Niagara dock, on the 31st of December last, in beautiful style. She has been named "The City Of Toronto", and is to be commanded by Captain Dick, so well known to the public, as Master of the steamer Gore.
The steamer City of Toronto, is owned by Messrs. Dick & Heron. She is nearly as possible, a model of trans- atlantick steamers - no expense has been spared, to render her a superior sea boat: and she will commence running early in the Spring, between Toronto and Kingston. Her extreme length is 168 feet, beam 24 feet - and she will be propelled by two powerful engines. A mate to the City of Toronto is, we are informed, now on the stocks, for Mr. Bethune, of Coborg. She is to be named the "Princess Royal".
The Lake Ontario Mail line will be - The Niagara, Capt. Sutherland; The City of Toronto, Capt. Dick; and The Princess Royal, Capt. Coleleugh.
The name "The City of Toronto" given to the new Steamboat, cannot fail to operate in her favour, as she is the first boat on the Lake bearing the name of this rising city.
