p.1 On Monday sailors will commence fitting up the tow of the steamer D.D. Calvin in view of the immediate opening of navigation. As soon as possible the Calvin and tow will leave for Toronto to load timber.
Delbert Mallette left today for Toronto to join the schr. Straubenzie.
Capt. Rees, of Clayton, has arrived to take charge of the str. Islander.
Joseph Devan has been appointed mate of the schr. Emerald, and will join her in Toronto next week.
S. Tyo has been appointed mate of the schr. Norway, of Garden Island, and will commence work on Monday.
Capt. J. Donnelly, sr., wanted to wager today that the str. Pierrepont would not make a trip to the island next Saturday.
Capt. Mawdsley, of St. Catharines, who will sail the str. Glengarry, is superintending the fitting of her up for navigation.
The str. James Swift was let into the water at Davis' dock yesterday afternoon. The boat showed great staunchness and did not leak a drop.
The schr. Annie Falconer is being thoroughly overhauled. She has been chartered to carry a few loads of coal from Charlotte to this port, and to take lumber back.
The schr. White Oak has been chartered to carry eleven loads of coal from Charlotte to this port. Capt. Quinn is having his vessel put into thorough sailing trim here. He will be ready to start to fill his contract in a few days.
