p.1 General Paragraphs - The str. Armenia took a run up the lake this morning to see how the ice was. She leaves for Toronto this afternoon with the barges Valencia and Norway to load timber for Garden Island.
Kingston and Montreal Forwarding Co. has three barges on the ways at Portsmouth being repaired.
The schr. Dunn is chartered for the season to carry lumber from Toledo to Garden Island.
The str. Maud expects to start on her Cape route next week.
The str. Sylvan Stream will not start running for a month yet, at least.
Capt. George Philips has command of the schooner Speedwell this season.
The str. Islander leaves on Monday to go on her route between Clayton and Alexandria Bay.
The str. Pierrepont made her first trip to the Cape yesterday afternoon. She went around the lower end of Wolfe Island.
The schooner Grimsby is loading lumber at Toronto for Garden Island. Other of the Matthews' crafts will do the same.
Nicholas Henderson is now engaged drawing paintings of the prop. Algonquin for Capt. McMaugh. Mr. Henderson will finish two water-color designs of the boat
Capt. Rees, Clayton, mate with Capt. Miller last season, will have charge of the St. Lawrence this summer. Mr. Kendall goes as mate. Capt. Miller will probably take J. Turgeon mate on the Sylvan Stream, and Capt. Charlebois has the Islander.
Nicholas Henderson is not sure that he will sail to the world's fair in his yacht. If his business will not allow him to get off in time to sail up, he will probably hitch the yacht behind a steamer and have the boat towed to Chicago. A party of six will accompany him and all will live on board.
Messrs. J. & J.T. Mathews' fleet of schooners and propellers will be captained as follows this year: schooner Laura, Captain S.C. Malcolmson; schooner Lisgar, Capt. Coombs; schooner Grimsby, Captain James Martin; propeller Clinton, Capt. Maitland; propeller Niagara, Capt. Martin; schooner Emerald, Capt. Philp; schooner Clara Youell, Capt. Walter Colwell, who last year commanded the schr. S. & J. Collier.
