A Rapid Car Dumper

A new car-dumper was tested Wednesday on Nypano docks, Cleveland. A train of empty coal cars, of all sizes and dimensions, was backed up the long trestle and one car after another was pushed into the huge cylinder and held in a close embrace by powerful clamps. By cable attachment the cylinder was then rolled up on an incline until the car reached such a position that any loose contents it contained would spill out into the big hopper at the side and into the chutes leading down into the suppositious vessel below.

The test was made especially to see if the novel machine would handle any sized cars, and it was eminently successful. It was the last of a series of tests, and marked the completion of the big contrivance. During the test it required three minutes to complete the revolutions which would transfer a carload of coal from the gondola to the hold of the vessel. It is anticipated that the machine will unload 3,000 tons of coal in ten hours without effort.

Coal port docks competed heavily in their ability to load and unload cargoes rapidly. For example, in the previous day’s paper it was announced that the steamer C. F. BIELMAN had been loaded with 2,200 tons of coal at Toledo in just 12 hours – a record for that port. Speed in turning cargoes around obviously affected profits, so new and faster loading and unloading gear was often built during this era.
