p.1 General Paragraphs - Capt. Noonan has engaged a tug and a barge to do his business on the canal for the remainder of the season.

Personal Mention - Mrs. Capt. A. Milligan is down from St. Catharines on account of the death of her mother, Mrs. Booth.



The str. Rosedale is in port from Duluth with 60,000 bushels of wheat.

The tug Bronson arrived from Montreal this morning with six light barges.

The Calvin Co. will build a hull this winter for the machinery in the tug Traveller.

Donnelly Bros. have laid up their yacht Ariadne for the winter months at Davis' shipyard.

The prop. Niagara, from Duluth, is unloading 25,000 bushels of wheat at the M.T. Co.'s elevator.

The prop. Tilley with consorts Merritt and Toledo, from Fort William, arrived this morning with wheat.

The steambarge King Ben starts on her trip down the canal the latter part of next week or the following Monday.

Passed Port Colborne: Strs. Glengarry and Minnedosa, Orion, Fort William to Kingston, wheat; barge Waubaushene, Toledo to Collins Bay, timber.

The steambarge Jack is at Rossport, Lake Superior, awaiting a cargo. The prop. D.D. Calvin and consorts are at the Soo also awaiting charters to come in.

The str. Spartan went down to Montreal this morning. This is her last trip down the river this year. The Spartan will lay up at Kingston for the winter.

A new steamer to take the place of the Cibola will be constructed this winter in Toronto. The new vessel will be a three decker, the upper deck being used as a promenade. Her actual length will be 277 feet, with four feet more beam than the old Cibola. Mr. Rankin will have general supervision.

Herbert McMaster, Deseronto, has succeeded in passing his examination before the marine department at Kingston, and has been awarded his papers as mate. He made a very large percentage of marks, the result of application to his studies and duties. He will assist his father, Capt. Frank McMaster, on the schooner Annandale.

The Jack All Right.

It was rumored around the city that the steambarge Jack had been disabled on Lake Superior during the big blow in the early part of the week. The rumor is unfounded, as the Jack behaved splendidly and went through the storm when other larger boats were compelled to put into port for shelter. She lost some of her fuel from the deck, swept by the waves, but her cargo of coal, taken on at Cleveland, was safely discharged at Rossport.


Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Sept. 28th - The steambarge E.C. Pope arrived yesterday, having aboard the crew of the schr. C.A. King, of Detroit, consisting of Capt. Jas. Glenn, four men and one woman, whom they picked up off Point aux Barques, on Lake Huron. The King was bound from Toledo to Bay City coal-laden, and encountered a severe gale which gradually increased in force until she commenced leaking. All hands were put to the pumps, but could not save the vessel. She was finally sighted by Capt. Smith, of the Pope, who in response to cries for help, succeeded in saving the crew.

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Sept. 28th - The str. Robert L. Frye, bound up with coal, and the str. Corsica, bound down with corn, were in collision at the dyke in Hay Lake channel this morning. The Frye was cut through to the foremast and her bow was most entirely carried away. She lies with her decks underwater. The Frye was valued at $95,000 and carries insurance of $90,000. The Corsica is badly damaged. Her port bow is stove in, and she was opened up two feet below the water line. Her fore peak is full of water to the port.

Helpless In a Heavy Sea - Chicago, Sept. 28th - A remarkable advance in freight rates has called into service, during the last ten days, every available vessel, and many of these are now being heard from as injured or disabled. The str. Atlanta, of the Goderich line, which left Chicago on Thursday night for Grand Haven, with twenty-five passengers and a full cargo, broke her main shaft off Grand Haven and was left helpless in a heavy sea. Her distress signals were seen by the str. Sioux City, which towed her into Grand Haven. Wreckage of an unknown steamer was floating into the harbor of Manistique last night.
