The tug Thomson arrived this morning with four light barges from Montreal.

The schooner Acacia arrived from Sodus this morning with coal for Crawford & Co.

After November 1st the Kingston-Cape Vincent ferry will make only one trip daily.

The schooner Jamieson from Darlington discharged 10,000 bushels of barley at the M.T. company's elevator.

The steamer Valeria, the ferry boat between Gananoque and Clayton, has been placed in winter quarters in Anglin's Bay.

After October 31st the Thousand Island steamboat company will discontinue its service between Clayton and Alexandria Bay.

The S.S. Rosemount and consorts, from Fort William, are discharging 170,000 bushels of wheat at the M.T. company's elevator.

Arrivals at Richardsons' elevator: schooners Minnie, Katie Eccles, Ballou, Monitor and sloop Dandy, from bay ports with cargoes of grain.

Capt. Joseph Dix brought his steamer Valeria up from Gananoque Saturday and put her into winter quarters. Capt. Dix reports having enjoyed a successful season.

The scow Alice C. sank at the Cleveland seed company dock, Cape Vincent, with a load of baled hay. It was found that a muskrat had eaten a hole through her centre board.

The government tug Delisle and dredge Queen are again here. Soundings are being taken between Crawford's and the M.T. company's wharves. Some work is to be done there.

Had A Slow Trip - The New Island Wanderer was three or four hours late in arriving at this port from Cape Vincent on Saturday night. When in the vicinity of Nine Mile Point the steamer came to a stop and was obliged to use her searchlight in order to distinguish her position and course. She was greatly delayed by darkness and winds and did not reach her destination until after midnight. She had a number of passengers on board.


The Knapp Roller Boat.

Prescott, Oct. 28th - The alterations and improvements now being made on the Knapp roller boat at this port are simply the re-modelling of the craft back to the original plans of the inventor. Mr. Knapp says that his boat up to the present date had not been arranged on his original plans of construction. Still he had proved that, even under those circumstances, his idea had a telling success. As the vessel will shortly appear, all of his original plans will be carried out, as far as it is possible, in this model, and will show the application of power as originally intended. The alterations consist of placing one compound engine in the centre of the tubular construction, instead of one at each end, as in the present model. This, it is shown, will prove of great value in concentrating the driving power. The funnels will be done away with and an open bulk head will be substituted in original design. Then the flanges or paddles will extend the full length of the boat and project five inches. These flanges will be made of steel and arranged in such a way as to be capable of further projection if desired.

As Mr. Knapp says, this altered model will in reality be what his original designs called for, and with it he can more comprehensively demonstrate the enormous carrying capacity of his new craft over the present type of freight carriers. It is understood that with the present force of men at work on the boat next month will see the roller away from her present moorings.
