Valuable Craft With Their Cargoes Rest On Bottom.

New York, Aug. 13th - "The Detroit syndicate preparing to send divers to the bottom of Lake Erie in search of the old packet Atlantic, sunk off Long Point in 1852, will have their work for naught." says E.J. Hause, now of Ashbury Park, but who for years was sailing master of the old lake sloop Atlas. He declares that the treasure was brought up from the Atlantic a little over a year after she was sunk.

"A man named Green," said the skipper today, "a diver for a Buffalo concern, reached the vessel and located the safe, but was paralyzed by the water pressure before he could rig proper tackle. A buoy was made fast to the rope. Some few weeks later, William Pike, a seaman, of Buffalo, completed the job. The safe contained $75,000 in gold bullion."

Millions In Bottom.

Washington, D.C., Aug. 13th - Ellis J. Holland, of San Francisco, who is visiting in Washington, expressed his opinion that there is $12,000,000 worth of wealth sunk at the bottom of the great lakes. He said in part: "Ships with valuable burdens of iron, copper, steel, coal and machinery have gone down in some of the lakes' terrific storms and have left their cargoes in the depths to tempt wrecking companies and adventurers in coming years. From 1878 to 1898 alone 6,000 vessels were wrecked on those inland seas and about 1,100 of these were total losses. In all it is estimated that wealth to the amount of $12,000,000 lies in the lakes among the timber of sunken vessels. Unlike the treasures sunk on the Spanish traders," continued the veteran seafaring man, "much of this lake wealth is perishable, for on the old ships it was chiefly silver and gold, precious stones and pearls."

p.3 Gananoque, Aug. 13th - ....The coal schooner Britton, which had just pulled out of Gananoque when the storm of Thursday morning struck, had her jib and other sails pretty well ripped up. A new jib was put on yesterday and other repairs are being made before she clears.

The government supply boat Scout, with the Prescott in tow, engaged in the lighthouse service, was in port last evening.



The tug Edwards passed on her way from Ogdensburg to the Welland canal.

The steamer Dundee arrived from Montreal, and went into the government dry dock.

The steamer Alexandria was in port, Friday night, from Quebec. The steamer was crowded with tourists.

M.T. Co.'s elevator: The steamer Bothnia arrived light from Montreal; the steamer Windsor passed up, light, on her way to Oswego, to load coal for Montreal.

Swift & Co.: steamers Toronto and North King, down and up today; steamer Rideau Queen in from Ottawa today; steamer Plummer called last evening, and loaded a carload of orange meat for Calgary.

Music In Steamboat War - at Cape Vincent competing boat lines the Folgers and Holmes Bros. use bands to attract passengers.
