Tug Chieftain's Officers Not Qualified

The official enquiry into the collision between the tug Chieftain, of Kingston, and the steamer Hero, has been concluded at Montreal, and it is expected that the finding of the court will be announced with little delay.

Captain Olsen, of the Hero, after he had corroborated the evidence given by the pilot, who was in charge of the steamer at the time of the disaster, admitted that he had been in bed at the time of the collision, having left the charge of the ship to the pilot. The crash of the collision had been sufficient to awake him, and, hurrying to the bridge, he found that his ship was fast and hard against the Chieftain. Finding that the engines had been put "full speed astern" before he arrived on the bridge he saw that there was nothing left to be done but to save the lives of those who had been thrown into the water from the tug. He ordered the boats away, threw life boats and ropes in the water and took every precaution which seemed to him necessary for the saving of life. After the Chieftain had sunk he stood by for several hours in the hope that he would still be able to pick up some of the four persons who had been reported to him as missing.

Under cross-examination, he admitted that no boat had actually been lowered from his steamer, for, after giving the order to lower one, he had seen that there would have been nothing for a boat to do, the Chieftain having sunk in the meantime. When he dropped his anchor he was about one half mile from the spot where the collision had occurred.

Louis Leblanc, the mate of the Chieftain, when examined, admitted that he was not possessed of a certificate. He had been running up and down the river for several years and had always steered by local knowledge of the various points and promontories, and had never hitherto found that knowledge at fault.
