p.3 To the Editor of the Chronicle & Gazette.

Sir, - Under the Editorial head of the last number of your paper, I observe a copy of an act passed in the year 1837, entitled "An act to compel vessels to carry lights during the night." - and making sundry other provisions to regulate the navigation of the Lakes and Rivers of this Province. Some of the provisions of this Statute, as you justly observed, appear to be greatly overlooked; and I may add, that it is to be feared, all of them are, in a few instances, strictly adhered to, and cannot, therefore, be too frequently brought under the notice of Captains of vessels and others, navigating our waters. Carrying lights at night, when under weigh, should not be omitted, as they, in many instances, may be seen at a greater distance than the vessel which carries them - particularly in dark nights. At the same time, Captains of vessels and others, should bear in mind, that lights are not navigators; and that the safety of a vessel when under weigh, does not depend on the lights alone; - the mere carrying lights, or even a compliance with all the other necessary provisions of the Act of 1837, is not all that is required. This Statute provides for the relaxation of no other important duty - it relieves no watch - it provides for no more sleep - gives no leave of absence - dispenses with no services of either Officers or crew; in short, it provides no excuse for that, which, by care and attention, may be avoided.
