Canals of the St. Lawrence.

As the Canals of the St. Lawrence have lately attracted a good deal of attention, we republish a statement we made on authority a few weeks ago, showing the actual capability of the navigation:-

Length of Lock Width Depth

Welland Canal 150 ft. 26 ft. 6 in. 8 ft. 6 in.

Will admit vessels of about 142 feet in length and 26 feet beam.

Williamsburgh Canals, via Galopes, Point Iroquois, Rapide Plats, and Farran's Pt.

200 45 9

Cornwall 200 55 9

Beauharnois 200 45 9

Lachine 200 45 9

Vessels about 179 feet long, 44 feet beam, and drawing 9 feet of water will be able to pass through these Canals. The precise size will depend much on the angle of the sternpost and the breadth of the stem, on account of the swinging of the gates. Until some improvement is made in the River and Lake navigation, 6 to 7 feet will be enough for a vessel to draw. These sizes refer to the Canals when completed. [Montreal Gazette April 8th]
