To the Editor of the Argus.

Sir: - In the charge of the Chief Justice to the Jury in the case of Messrs. John and George Ives, Lessees of the Wolf Island Ferry, against Slueman and others, for infringing on their privilege, His Lordship stated, that "the Ferrymen were not obliged to carry Farm produce from the Island to market" - "That the people of the Island might conjointly or otherwise keep a boat to carry their produce to market, but that unless they came with produce, they could not come in their own boat to transact any other business, such as to register a deed."

It will appear evident from this charge that the Farmers of Long Island must keep up a boat to carry their produce to market, and that altho' they must be at this expense, in building and rigging a boat, as well as paying Captain and hands, they are subject to an expensive prosecution if they use her only under particular circumstances. This I believe to be contrary to the intention of the Legislature when they passed the amended Act on Ferries last session. This subject requires elucidation, which can best be done by discussing the question through the Press.
