p.2 On the 1st a race came off between the steamers London and Buffalo; the former being the swiftest British boat on Lake Erie, the latter the smartest among the American. The Buffalo started from Erie 32 minutes before her antagonist, after making every preparation with split hickory, etc. she was about seven miles ahead when the British boat left the wharf; but when she arrived at Buffalo (90 miles distant,) was only two miles astern having gained five miles upon the American champion. Captain Vanallen of the London is much opposed to racing, as well as the engineer, who has a large share in the boat; and it therefore took a great deal of banter to force on the contest. We trust the Americans will be satisfied with the defeat they have received, and that no more of these rather dangerous trials of speed will be necessary [Chatham Gleaner]
