Three Steamers Go Through The Work At The Great Sault

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Aug 3 The 800 foot lock was officially opened this forenoon and the revenue cutter Andrew Johnson and the river and harbor steamer Hancock were locked through. No official programme marked the opening of the largest lock in the world and the completion of one of the greatest engineering feats in the history of the country. Col. Lydecker, who succeeds the late Gen. Poe, Lieut. J. E. Cavanaugh and Miss Poe, Supt. E. D. Wheeler and his corps of engineers were among the party on board the Hancock when the first locking was made. The lock was commenced in 1889. IT is 800 feet in length between gates, 1,100 feet in length overall, 43 feet high, 100 feet wide to accommodate boats drawing 21 feet of water.
