The well known and popular Steamer America, which has run for several years between this city and Toronto, via the Canada Shore, went ashore at Cobourg on Saturday night. The circumstances under which the vessel met with the accident are about as follows, as we learn from Capt. Wilder of the Canada Express, who was on board. The wind which had been blowing quite a gale from the West, shifted to the South just as the America was going into Cobourg.-- When she came in between the piers she found the Steamer Princess Royal, lying at the east pier, where she desired to land. After running up above the Princess, she found a schooner ling in such a way as to prevent her being made fast immediately. The peculiar position of the piers placed the Steamer in such a situation that she could not easily back out or turn readily with a single engine. The result was, before any help could be rendered, she went ashore on the beach between the piers. The Steamer City of Toronto, came in about 3 o'clock on Sunday morning, and tried, in conjunction with the Princess Royal, to pull the America off, but did not succeed.
The crew spent the day yesterday in lightening the vessel, and succeeded last evening in working her off. We are happy to learn that all the damage the America received was to her upper works, and that was slight.-- Rochester Adv.
