The St. Lawrence not coming up Thursday, was a disappointment to a large train of passengers. Seven cars had to debouch their heavy loads at Forest and Clyde, while some of the traveler, preferring to wait for the Mississippi rather than railroad all night, laid over at this place until last evening.
The storm which damaged the machinery of the St. Lawrence, also "raised hob" with the other passenger Steamers. The Queen of the West had to make for the Canada Shore for shelter, not being able to weather the gale. When she arrived at Buffalo, her larboard guards were found to be badly stove in. The Detroit Steamer Western World did not venture out, at all, Wednesday night.
The Mississippi came up, yesterday, with her cabins literally stuffed with people, and cleared last evening, on her regular time, with a very heavy load. Steam boating, even at this season of the year, is much more agreeable than thundering along night and day over a railroad; and so a vast number of people appear to think, for the Steamers run full, generally, both ways.
