11. Ship of the Month - cont'd. filed this story. "A new route was opened yesterday, from this point to B u f falo direct, via G o d e r i c h and the Buff a l o and Lake H u r o n Rail w a y - a direct route of some f i f t e e n hours, eight of w h i c h is by steamer, on w hich one may pass a pleasant night, and taking the r a i l r o a d at 4 A . M. reach Buffalo at 9 P. M. the same day. The steamer K A L O O L A H has arrived here (Saginaw) and d e parted on her first trips, and will r e t u r n tomorrow, b r i n g i n g the M ayor of G o d e r i c h and the agent of the road; and he r e a f t e r her trips will be regular, so as to connect wit h the road. By this route a person ma y leave here and reach Buffalo as soon as the mail goes to Detroit. The arri v a l of this first steamer was gree t e d with salvos of a r t i l l e r y and cheers and huzzas of the citizens, who are of course d e l i g h t e d after being shut up here so long, they are f i n a l l y to have avenues for their lumber and commerce in all d i r e c tions." Capt. A. N. McGregor, m e n t i o n e d earlier, p e r formed an act of hero i s m to save his ship while she was r u n n i n g on this service, and this was d e s c r i b e d in The Q u e stion of a Harb o u r of Refuge on the Canadian Coast of Lake Huron, D i s c u s s e d at Some Length by the I n v e r h u r o n Harbour Committee, Co u n t y of B r u c e , p u b l i s h e d in 1869. A section of this book was devo t e d to r e v e a l i n g ho w insecure was the an c h o r a g e be h i n d C h a n t r e y (sic) Island. (This is how the Islan d's name was spelled throughout th e d i s c u s s i o n . ) Chan t r y Island is located two m iles sout hwest of the m o u t h of the Saugeen River at S o u t h a m p ton, Ontario. The book n o t e d that "The true value of the anchorage so called, at C h a n t r e y Island, can be best est i m a t e d by the f o l l o w i n g narrative of facts: - In the year 1856, the steamer MAZEPPA, at that time plying betw e e n So u t h a m p t o n and Detroit, while at anchor inside of C h a n t r e y Island, du r i n g a gale d r a g g e d her anchor, s t r a n d e d under the lee of the island, and went to pieces. "Some years later, the steamer KALO OLAH, while running on the G o d e r i c h and So u t h a m p t o n route, and u nder the comm a n d of Capt. A. M. McGregor, a thorough sailor, well a c q u a i n t e d w i t h the entire Lake H u r o n coast, was caught in a gale, in a similar manner, w hile at anchor in the same place. Steam was kept up and the p a d d l e w h e e l s kept m o v i n g to relieve the strain upon the anchors; but not w i t h s t a n d i n g this, she c o m m e n c e d to drag her anchors during the night, and would, no doubt, have gone ashore and to pieces had not the c a p tain, with m u c h intrepidity, made a small line fast around his body and swam ashore to the b r e a k w a t e r on the n o r t h end of the island, then hauled ashore a larger hawser w hich he made fast to a post, thus further rel i e v i n g the strain on the anchors; so that by the c o m b i n e d power of anchors, steam and land hawser, he succeeded in saving the v e s s e l . " Re s e a r c h by the late Fred Lan d o n r e s u l t e d in an article e n t i t l e d "The C a n a dian Steam Packet Service of the U pper Lakes", by Dr. W. R. Wightman, that a p p ear ed in the Winter 1990 issue of "Inland Seas". From this, we have that Go d e r i c h b u s i n e s s m e n T. E. Van E very and George Rumball leased the K A L O O L A H in the spring of 1860. She was sc h e d u l e d to run from G o d e r i c h to S o u t h a m p t o n three times a week. The fol l o w i n g a d v e r t i s e m e n t a p p e a r e d in the "Goderich H u r o n Signal" on June 27, 1860: " G oderich to Sarnia & Port Huron, Kincardine, Saugeen, &c. 1860 Spring Arrangements.
