3. M a r i n e News - cont'd. Andrie Inc., of Musk egon, Michigan, will be adding another large tug to its lake fleet in 1996. She was built in 1964 by the Gulfport S h i p b u i l d i n g Corp. of Port Arthur, Texas, as (a) K A T H R I N E CLEWIS for the Gul f c o a s t Transit Co., Tampa, Florida. A s i s t e r t u g of K A R E N AND R I E (built in 1965), the CLEWIS is 1 1 2 . 0 x 3 1 . 5 x 1 8 . 8, 433 Gross and 294 Net, and she is p o w e r e d by two 16cylinder Gene r a l M o t o r s diesel engines. The CLEWIS will make her debut in the lakes this spring, and she w ill be r e n a m e d (b) R E B E C C A LYNN A N D R I E for her new duties. We are given to u n d e r s t a n d that Andrie Inc. will man and tow the new cement barge to be o p e r a t e d in the lakes by the Lafa r g e interests. J. W. Purvis Marine Ltd. has this win t e r r e p o w e r e d its 80-foot, 1913- b u i l t tug ADANAC, (a) ED W A R D C. WHALEN, (b) JOHN McLEAN, which Purvis a c q uired in 1994 w i t h the w i n d u p of the oper a t i o n s of A. B. Mc L e a n Ltd., also of the C a nadian Soo. This d e v e l o p m e n t is good news for the ADANAC, but bad new s for a nother former M c L e a n tug, the ROD McLEAN, (a) FAIRPORT, (b) BAYPO RT (I), (c) TUG A. (d) TWI N PORT, w h i c h dates from 1914. ROD M c L E A N had a n e w e r and. more p o w e r f u l engine in her than did ADANAC, but her hull was in bad shape, so the d e c i s i o n was made to transfer the R O D ' s m a c h i n e r y into ADANAC. The final d i s p o s i t i o n of ROD M c L E A N is not yet definite, but she likely will be scrapped. In the F e b r u a r y issue, we m e n t i o n e d the "downsizing" of the tanker fleet of So canav Inc., w h i c h in a d d ition to the 1995 sale of L'AIGLE and LE F R E N E NO. 1, w o u l d now incl ude the sale of J. C. PHILLIPS, L. ROCHE T T E and H U B E R T G A U CHER, w i t h the latter taken bac k on charter. V e r y little i n f o r m a t i o n has b e come available, but we do kno w that the C a n a d i a n regis t r y for the P H I L L I P S was closed in September, 1995, and that of the R O C HETTE in October. We u n d e r s t a n d that the PHILL I P S is n o w o p e rating as (c) TRA D E W I N D SPIRIT, flying the flag of Panama. A n o t h e r S o c a n a v tanker, W. M. VACY ASH, (a) L A K E S H E L L (III)(87), w h i c h l a t t e r l y has been in the a f f i l i a t e d fleet of QMT N a v i g a t i o n Inc., was not m e n t i o n e d in press reports c o n c e r n i n g S o c anav's operations, but we are told that she n o w also is under P a n a m a n i a n registry, and we have heard the name of A p o l l o N a v i g a t i o n m e n t i o n e d in c o n n e c t i o n w ith her. With the ret u r n to service of the "Maritime Class" steamer C U Y A H O G A (the former J. B U R T O N AYERS) during 1995, there wa s renewed interest on the part of o b servers in r e l a t i o n to this i n t e r e s t i n g group of w a r t i m e - b u i l t ships. In 1995, only two other "Maritimers" were in active service, na m e l y R I C H A R D REISS of the Erie Sand Ste a m s h i p Company, and GEORGE A. S L O A N of USS Great Lakes Fleet Inc., w h i l e H A M I L T O N T R A N S F E R (the former C R I S P I N O G L E B A Y [II]) was at the Dofasco Plant in Hami lton, trying to be a r e p l a c e m e n t for a f a l len ore bridge. G E O R G E A. SLOAN was c o n v e r t e d to a self- u n l o a d e r in 1967 and, like the REISS, no longer has her o r i ginal steam engine, hav i n g been r e p o w e r e d in 1985. We are p l e a s e d to see that her owner c o nsiders the SLOAN to have an active future w i t h the USS fleet, as evidenced by the fact that during wi n t e r lay-up at Superior, the SLOAN's steam steering gear has been r e f u r b i s h e d w i t h a s t e e r i n g control retrofit by Sperry Ma r i n e Inc. and the fitting of a ne w hydraulic, clevis - t y p e s t e e r i n g system by Hyde Products Inc., of Cleveland. Since the open i n g of the n e w St. Clair River railroad tunnel between Sarnia and Port H u r o n in 1995, the former C a n a d i a n National r a i l f e r r y barges and their tugs have been lying idle at their Sarnia docks, p e n d i n g disposition. The tugs are the 100-foot, 272 Gross and 203 Net ton M A R G A R E T Y O R K E and PHYLLIS Y ORKE w h i c h wer e built in 1970 at Wheatley, Ontario, and w h i c h are exact s i s t e rships except for their power. The barges are the 372-foot ST. CLAIR, (a) PERE M A R Q U E T T E 12, built in 1927, and the 287-foot, 19 15 - b u i l t SC OT IA II. It now is r e p orted that all four vessels were p u rchased late in 1995 by McKeil Marine Ltd., w h i c h a p p a r e n t l y plans to use them in the lumber trade on Lake Superior. No further details are available as yet. - C o n t i n u e d on Page 13 * * * * *
