MORE GREAT LAKE MEMORIES We have no details of the inci dent but AUSTRALIA certainly has had a good bang on her bow. Here we see the wounded barge along side her towing steamer, Corri gan's powerful ITALIA. Anyone know anything about this? All photos this page are from the collection of Ralph Roberts, to whom we are most grateful for their use. This is a view of AUSTRALIA, our March Ship of the Month, under construction at South Chicago early in 1897. Here we see AUSTRALIA, late in her time as a barge, with only two masts. Apparently a Young photo at the Soo, it is remarkably similar to the 1906 view of AMAZON we showed in the March issue. This is AUSTRALIA as a steamer, beached on the Ca nadian shore of the St. Clair River after her June 13, 1907, collision with the Lehigh Valley package freighter BETHLEHEM.
