Wreck of Sunken Miztec Disappears

Special to the Free Press

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., June 16.--The barge Miztec, which foundered near Whitefish Point in the storm May 13, is missing from the spot where the wreck was reported, according to Captain H. G. Fisher, of the U. S. S. Morrill, which returned to this port Thursday after an extended search.

It is Captain Fisher's theory that the Miztec broke up while on the bottom with her heavy cargo of salt. For three miles around the point where the Miztec sank the Morrill made soundings and found no trace of the wrecked vessel. The danger to navigation, from the wreck, which was reported in 18 feet of water in the course of ships bound for upper Lake Superior ports, apparently no longer exists.

The Morrill had gone to the scene of the wreck under orders to destroy the sunken vessel.
