- The Schooner Rockaway and Her Crew
William Brinen, one of the owners of the schooner Rockaway, which was reported in danger off South Haven, has returned. He found the boat's crew at South Haven. They had been taken off the boat by the life saving crew in an almost exhausted condition. One man had his fingers frozen, but otherwise the men were all right. The Rockaway was anchored off South Haven. After he anchored were dropped she became water logged, but is not in a bad condition, and a tug will today tow her to Benton Harbor, for which place she was destined.
A dispatch from South Haven, published in the Chicago Tribune, has this to say about the schooner Rockaway:
"The wind blowing a gale from the west it was determined to make the west shore, but before reaching there the boat's canvass was blown to shreds and some of the gearing carried overboard. The wind changed to northwest during the night, and the following day the boat drifted to a point eight miles north of this port, when Captain Thompson let go the anchor. Previous to this the vessel had sprung a leak, and, after anchoring, became water logged. One third of the cargo was thrown overboard. The cabin filled with water, and all night the men were compelled to huddle together on deck to keep from freezing. One of the men secured an iron kettle from below and built a small fire in it which served the purpose of a signal and to warm their hands. At daylight a flag was hoisted and the life saving crew at South Haven succeeded in getting all ashore."
