Heavy Fire. - About half last one o’clock this mornings fire broke out in the cupola of the Empire Elevator, owned by F.,T. Carrington and P. Rathbun, and although every exertion was made by our efficient fire brigade, with the assistance of the hydrants from the adjoining mills, within two hours the whole building was a smoking ruin, the walls fallen in, and the heavy timbers mixed up in an indiscriminate mass of grain smoldering with a fitful glare.

The exertions of the firemen not only preserved the neighboring Elevators and other buildings on the east side of the river, but those on the west, which were several times on fire from the sparks carried, even by the light wind which blew across the river.

The Empire Elevator was built in 1854, and we learn was valued at $35,000, and in sured for only $22,000. At the time of the fire it contained about 60,000 bushels of grain, in which two-thirds were corn and the remainder wheat, most of which was insured.

The insurances, we learn, were chiefly in Eastern Companies, and from the well known promptness and liberality of their good agent here, there can be no doubt of a speed and ready settlement of the claims. In fact, the agent was so busily engaged this morning, in establishing the claims of his clients, that he had not time to give the slightest information to the press, relative to amounts and Companies, so we can only give the amount today in round numbers.
