Heavy Sea Makes Rescue work Difficult for the Towing Steamer Breitung.

Buffalo, N.Y., Aug. 25.--Captain Knud Peterson, of the barge Magnetic of Cleveland, and his crew of seven men narrowly escaped being drowned last night when that ship broke in two in Lake Erie, 15 miles west of Long Point.

The Magnetic, which was being towed by the steamer E. N. Breitung, became unmanageable on account of the breaking of her steam steering gear and shortly after getting into the trough of the sea she broke in two between No. 8 and No. 9 hatches.

Captain Peterson sounded an alarm signal to the steamer, which had been pulled part way around by the barge when she got into the trough. Captain T. D. Sullivan, of the Breitung, then ordered the tow-line let go, and on being informed by Captain Peterson of what had happened aboard the Magnetic, and given the additional information that the barge had nine feet of water in her hold, he prepared to rescue the men.

The crew had much difficulty in getting into the life-boats, for the sea was exceptionally high.
