_______
Crew Abandons the Magnetic When Steering Gear Becomes Disabled---Fills Rapidly.
_______The barge Magnetic, owned by the Juliett-Graverate Steamship company of Fairport, foundered two miles off Long Point, Ont., early Saturday morning. Nine members of the crew, including Captain K. Peterson of 298 Elk street, this city, abandoned the ship when her steering gear became disabled shortly after 11 o'clock. The Magnetic was bound from Duluth to Buffalo with a cargo of 2800 tons of ore and was in tow of the steamer Edward Breitung.
The crippled gear caused the steamer to fall into the trough of the sea and she began to fill rapidly. The tow lines was cast off and the men took to the big life boat. A 60-mile-an-hour gale was blowing out of the southwest and the Magnetic's crew was tossed about for over an hour before they were picked up by the Breitung. George Allen and Harry Troney, the last two men in the life boat, were compelled to jump to the rail of the Breitung as a heavy sea swept the life craft out from the ship.
The Beratung remained near the abandoned barge but at 3 o'clock she disappeared beneath the waves. The Magnetic was 350 feet long and had a 40-foot beam. She hailed from Fairport, O.
