- Sinking of the Magnetic
The barge Magnetic, which foundered in Lake Erie last Saturday, was insured for $30,000 in companies represented by Willcox, Peck & Hughes. Captain K. Pedersen and the members of the crew, who were here yesterday made statements.
Henry Thorsen, a salt water sailor of Brooklyn, N. Y., was a member of the crew, and it was his first trip on the lakes. Thorsen said he was on three ships on the ocean that were torpedoed and he came to the lakes expecting to have smooth sailing.
According to the statement of Captain Petersen and the members of the crew three pumps could not hold the water which poured in pretty fast and the Magnetic went down in sixty feet of water after all the members of the crew were taken off. The men give Captain T. D. Sullivan of the Steamer Breitung much praise for his work in rescuing the sailors in the big sea that was running.
