Archibald Woods of Lindsay, Canada Lost OverboardAbout nine o’clock yesterday morning as the Schooner Philo Bennett, was on her way from Deseronto to Oswego a young man named Archibald Woods was lost overboard.
Captain Eccles gives us the following version of the affair: The schooner was about six miles south of the main Duck Islands when Woods and the mate Richardson, were washing out the yawl boat. The end of the davit tackle fall got loose and let the boat drop some, which caused her to give a lurch, throwing Woods out backwards.
The mate had stepped out of the yawl a moment before and at once threw some boards to the man who did not appear to make for them. Capt. Eccles at once ordered the vessel brought head to wind and the boat lowered. It was instantly manned by two sailors who put off for the drowning man.
When the boat was sixty or seventy feet from him he sank and did not come up again. Woods was only eighteen year of age and lives in the vicinity of Lindsay, Canada. He shipped on the Bennett at Deseronto some three weeks since as a green hand. Capt. Eccles says he was a sober and hard working young man. The Bennett arrived at Oswego at four o’clock yesterday afternoon with a load of lumber for E. W. Rathbun & Co.
