“We believe the first substantial experiment of a canal steamboat in this State was made in 1823, by William Avery and Hiram Scoville of Onondaga county. Their boat had a screw wheel in the stern, and they ran it from Manlius to Palmyra and back. The experiment gave tolerable satisfaction, but it demonstrated the superior economy of horse power with the canal as it was at the time.”
