Flouring Mills of Oswego

Being desirous to obtain all the information possible upon a subject so important to this city as its milling business, and of imparting it to our readers, we have procured the following statistics in relation to the Flouring Mills of Oswego. We have found much difficultly in arranging them, and to obtain the requisite information has been a work of much labor, but we shall be amply repaid for our exertions if they are found of interest to our readers.---

Wiman's (Eagle) Mill

This mill is situated on the Oswego Canal and has an elevator capable of elevating 1200 bushels of grain in an hour. The mill has five run of stone, and is capable of making 450 bbls of flour a day. It can store 30,000 bus of wheat, and 3000 bbls of flour. It made 37,000 bbls of flour in 1851

Penfield & Co's (Washington) Mill

This mill has six run of stone and can make 600 bbls of flour a day. It can store 100,000bus of wheat and 10,000 bbls of flour—The number of bbls. Of flour manufactured at this mill in 1851 is 70,000. The elevator is capable of elevating 1,100 tons of grain per hour. It is located on the Oswego Canal.

City Mill

This mill has two run of stone and can make 200 bbls of flour per day. It can store 1500 bbls of flour

Doolittle (Empire) Mill

Has five run of stone and can make 500 bbls of flour per day. The elevator at this mill can elevate 1,200 bus of grain per hour. The amount of flour manufactured at this mill in 1851 is 61,000. This mill can store 100,000 bu. of wheat and 5000 bbls of flour.

Fitzhugh & Co. (Lake Ontario) Mill

This mill has seven run of store. It can manufacture 650 bbls of flour a day, 63,225 of flour were made at this mill in 1851. The elevator at this mill can elevate 1,500 bus of grain per hour. 40,000 bus of grain and 3,000 bbls of flour can be stored at this mill with ease.

Cochran, Lyon & Co's (Skenandoah) Mill

This mill contains four run of stone, and can manufacture 400 bbls of flour per day. In 1851 this mill made 43,000 bbls of flour. It can store 30,000 bus of wheat and 10,000 bbls of flour. One thousand bushels of grain per hour can be elevated at this mill.

Merrick & Co's (Seneca) Mill

Contains ten run of stone and can manufacture 850 bbls of flour a day. It made 75,000 bbls of flour in 1851. It can store 75,000 bushels of wheat, and 15,000 bbls. of flour. The elevator at this mill is capable of elevating 1800 bushels of grain per hour.

The above mills are all located on the east side of the Oswego River, and on the Oswego Canal. We shall endeavor to publish the statistics in relation to the mills on the west side tomorrow.
