Marine Hospital

Some few weeks since a petition was in circulation in this city, praying Congress to establish a Marine Hospital at Oswego. When we last saw the petition it contained a large number of signatures, and its object was much talked of and commented by our citizens. Latterly however, we have heard nothing of it, and are fearful that the movement has not been so successful as we had reason to expect. Is this so? Will some of those persons who then took such an active part in circulating the petition give us some information as to how they disposed of it, and whether it is now a fair way of success.

We are anxious that a Marine Hospital should be established at Oswego, as indeed all her citizens should be. The season of navigation brings to our city hundreds of men who are usually employed as sailors. Every year witnesses some of these persons attacked by disease, and furnishes a large catalog of individuals who would be benefited by such an institution. During the past year we have known some instances where persons stricken by disease were thrown upon private charity for the means of support during their sickness. And there are doubtless scores of similar cases of which we are not informed. There are many reasons by such an institution should be established here, not the least of which is the immense revenue which the National Government receives at this port which they have as yet made in little, if any return. Having neglected the pair of this Pier, (which neglect private subscription was obliged to make good or else the commercial interest of he city would be seriously injured) it is to be hoped that the Government will not be so unjust or inconsiderate as to refuse to grant to Oswego an institution which she so much needs as a Marine Hospital.
