The East Harbour
- Full Text
The East Harbor-- The sad spectacle of three wrecks which presents itself to the view of all who visit the vicinity of the east harbor, immediately suggests to the minds of the “looker on” the necessity of a speedy improvement of that place so as to prevent the immense loss of property which annually occurs there. We intended to say a few words in regard to the subject in yesterday;'s paper, but owing to the press of other matter, we were unable to do so. And even now time or space will not allow us to enter into any lengthy detail of the advantages to be derived from any improvement which would prevent in future these heavy losses of property nor is it necessary to do so,--these advantages are too apparent to our readers to need to be further demonstrated by us. But as regards the nature of the improvement, we will remark that, a suggestion was made in our hearing yesterday to the effect that a chain cable be laid down from the Island to the Lighthouse, so as to form an anchorage for vessels, and thus prevent them from going ashore to Grampus Bay.
The suggestion appeared to us to be a very good one, if the plan which it recommends can be carried out, and we see no great obstacle to its accomplishment at present least none which cannot be surmounted, For the purpose of bringing this matter more clearly before our readers we cordially invite those of our citizens who are skilled in marine affairs to make use of our columns for the purpose of giving publicity to the views upon the suggestion referred to.
