_____Richard Powers, President of the Chicago branch of the general organization of the Seamen's Union, arrived in this city last evening and was met by a delegation of sailors and escorted to the Reciprocity House. When it became noised that Mr. Powers had arrived, the sailors poured into the Reciprocity and soon filled it. As his object in visiting this city is the organization of a branch of the Seamen's Union, a meeting was formed with Hugh McGinn as chairman and Michael Farrell, secretary and Mr. Powers addressed those present (numbering about 100) on the past and future of the Union.
His remarks were listened to with attention, and upon conclusion a committee, consisting of Hugh McGinn, M. Farrell, P. Hughes, P. Meagher and Samuel Smith, was appointed to nominate permanent officers. After discussing the matter in all its bearings, the meeting adjourned until Monday evening at 7:30 at the same place.
This afternoon at 2 o'clock the enrolling of members will commence, and the organization will be completed Monday night. Mr. Powers informs us that the objects of the Union are protection and benevolence, and that although it dates its organization from April last only, it numbers today 5,000 members. There are branches at all important ports on the upper lakes and stations at the lesser points. He stopped at Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland and Buffalo on his way here, and reports the branches at those places in a healthful condition.
There are no less than 250 sailors here now, and if they join they will make a strong organization.
