Safety on the Lakes.– The number and fearful character of the accidents on Lake Erie this year, is beyond measure dreadful. It is astounding to think about, especially when the public see in the very midst of these disasters, the large lake boats from Buffalo racing with each other, running miles side by side with the most fearful excitement on board, and one boat crowding the other ashore, rather than that her rival shall be victorious! In addition to it all, the Captains and Proprietor fo there steamers, are announcing their own folly, by shamefully approving of such public outrages,, by offering to run their boats and beat their rivals or forfeit a $1,000! In this connection, it is but just to remark, that no serious steamboat disaster has occurred on Lake Ontario for twenty years!
