Just how long shipbuilding will continue in Northern Ohio depends largely on the ability of the American Ship Building Company to obtain contracts. With the building of the St. Lawrence Seaway, they are no longer restricted to Great Lakes shipping only. Naval contracts may stimulate the industry. Another possibility is government subsidization of Lakes shipping. But with higher labor and material costs, and competition, American shipping companies are looking for new ways to acquire cheaper new vessels or modernize and enlarge older vessels. Although the future outlook is improving some, there is much to be done before Ohio's northern shore again will be on a substantial basis as a shipbuilding center. 112
