Cleveland Built Boats During the years 1844-1854, Benjamin Buel Jones launched the following boats at Cleveland, Ohio: The Washington, Irving, Racine, Emmlin, Oneida, Hope, Forest City and Steven F. Gale. Benjamin worked in partnership with his brother, George Washington (G. W.) Jones who had his own shipyard there and may have also had his own shipyard for a time. GILMAN APPLEBY (1806-1867) Shipbuilder and mariner, Gilman Appleby, was born on August 29, 1806 in Bethlehem, New Hampshire to James and Abigail Whitmore Appleby. A brother, Charles W. Gilman, was born in 1808. Following the death of the father, their mother married Samuel Blakeslee and seven children were born to the couple: Orville, Aurelia, Harriet, Eliza, Sarah, Maria and Chauncey. On November 1, 1825, Gilman married Julia Ann Ball in Ashtabula, Ohio. The schooner Conneaut Packet was built by Appleby in 1827. In 1834, the Conneaut Steamboat Association was formed, of which he was a member. Stock subscriptions were sold and plans were made to build the first vessel. George W. Jones was brought in from Black River, Ohio and the side- wheel steamer, North America, was built by Jones and Appleby in the same year.
