We regret to see that planks and earth are insufficient to breast the strong current in our river at present, and that the whole lower part of the coffer dam is doomed. Since our last all the eastern portion of the dam from the bridge to the point opposite the northern end of the City Hall has been swept away. The dam on the east side of the river which forms a part of the canal basin was also carried away last evening, giving the current full sweep among the vessels and canal boats lying inside of it.
With the exception, however, of one canal boat, which was sunk, they have thus far escaped injury, and have been securely fastened, so that no further damage is apprehended. The United States Dredge Boat, Under Captain Malcolm, having been placed at the disposal of the Mayor, will, we presume, remove any obstructions which may have arisen from the washing away of these works.
