- Steamboat Collision on Lake Erie
Buffalo, June 23d, 1852
The steamer Northern Indiana left here yesterday on a pleasure excursion, with some three hundred people on board, among whom were Christopher Wright, Gov. Marcy and others, She put in to Cleveland this morning in distress, having sustained injuries through a collision with the schooner Plymouth, at 1/2 A.M. between Black River light and Cleveland. The steamer struck the schooner about midships, piercing her nearly through. The concussion was very severe. The captain of the schooner and two hands sprung on board the steamer. Ten persons on board the vessel escaped in a small boat, and were picked up by a steamer, destitute of clothing. The vessel went down, bow first, instantly. Both vessels had lights out. The accident will probably end the excursion.
