New Line of Piers Costing $30,000 Will be Constructed to Provide Increased Dockage Facilities - Capacity of Machine Shop at Yard is Doubled
_____

Improvements costing upward of $30,000 are to be made at the shipyard by the St. Lawrence Marine Railway Co. of Ogdensburg this winter. A line of piers extending 280 feet out into the river is to be erected on the west side of the present west pier and paralleling it. The cribs will be constructed of long leaf yellow pine, which has been ordered in the south.

They will be filled solidly with stone and the contract for hauling it to the scene has been placed with the McConville trucking concern. This part of the job is already under way but the actual construction will not be undertaken until the timbers begin to to arrive.

Owing to the uncertainties of transportation the date of arrival of the pins is in doubt but it is believed that nothing will stand in the way of rushing operations by the time ice forms in the river. The piers will be built under the direction of Arthur Woods, superintendent of the yard and according to his own plans. A temporary covering of planking will be placed on the piers but eventually they will he topped with concrete. .

In discussing the work yesterday, John C. Howard, of the St. Lawrence Marine Railway Co., said:

“The present piers were built for a class of boats that came into use when the old Welland canal was opened. The vessels of today are so much larger and heavier that the piers were not strong enough to furnish dockage for the tonnage now being handled. Also, have dock room enough under the present conditions. Although the materials will be obtained elsewhere, the work will be done by Ogdensburg labor.”

“The company has just completed the erection of an addition to the machine shop at the plant which increases its capacity 100 per cent. The cost of this added to that of providing the new line of piers will make a total of about $40,000.
