The Schooner Hastings. - For the past two or three days we have been forborne allusion to the case of the Hastings, Captain Chalmer's vessel, being extremely unwilling to increase the anxiety of those whose friends made up her crew, and furthermore, hoping to hear of her safety. A week has now elapsed, and nothing has been learned from the vessel, and the conviction has settled down on almost the entire community that she has gone down with all on board.

She left the Canal last Thursday evening, loaded with soft coal from Cleveland for the Oswego Gas company. The crew of the Crawford, which left the canal just ahead of the Hastings, say that when last seen she was hanging to the north shore. Various reports have reached us with regard to the safety of the vessel, all of which have been contradicted by the circumstances of the case, or by the assertions of vessel captains. Her boat has come ashore, but this circumstance is, in itself, no proof of the loss to the schooner. It was thought at first that she was lying near the lee of some island, rigging up her canvas, and waiting for a favorable time to put into port, but had such been the case, she would have arrived before this.

The Hastings was a Canada built vessel, and had sailed about seven seasons. We have even able to obtain only the following names of the crew, which consisted of eight men, all told: George Chalmers, captain; - Haskins, first mate; Henry Crouch, second mate; Harvey Crouch, some of the above, and James Cornish, seamen.

We believe the vessel was owned by Capt. Chalmers, and a partner, name not known, and was insured. It is barely possible that the Hastings may be safe, but got us it seems very improbable.
