Our Harbor

The gales of last winter made sad havoc with the water defenses of our harbor. The “East Pier” was almost bodily carried away by the gales of early winter, while the "West Pier” was greatly damaged in many places. These interested in the commerce of Oswego will be glad to learn that all these damages are being thoroughly repaired. Under the efficient supervision of the Government Agent Capt. W. S. Malcolm, of this city, a large force is employed on both piers, so that by the time the storms of another December are upon us, the harbor will be in as safe condition as at any previous time of its history.

The funds which pay for the re-building of our piers are drawn from the appropriation by Congress, for the preservation of Lake harbors, the passage of which was procured by the Member of this city, and without which one more winter would have left us without a harbor. No appropriations for repairs having been made for several years, in a time of war when the Government needed every cent of money it could command, it was only by dint of perseverance and good management that the bill could be got through. By making the appropriations general and by making the case so plain that the most obdurate could not fail to see that economy demanded it, the money was secured. Now we can all comprehend what the hopeless condition of our harbor would be without it.
