Lightship, Raised 10 Feet From Water At Stern, Again Settles to Bed of Lake

After the stern of the sunken lightship Milwaukee No. 95, at the Racine Boat Manufacturing company's west dock, had been raised out of water about ten feet this morning by assiduous pumping, and the pumps were busily engaged in clearing the forward hold of water, the vessel sank again when another leak was sprung.

For a time the pumps worked steadily on the forward hold. Although the bow of the boat did not appear to raise any, it was noticeable that the stern of the vessel was lifted higher and higher above the surface of the water. When the leak was sprung, the vessel quietly settled back again to its former position. The leak will have to be found and closed before another attempt can be made to raise the vessel.

Fully 300 people watched the pumping operations this morning. The deck of the scow, the ice about the sunken vessel, and the adjoining wharf were crowded with a black mass of humanity. The surface of the ice for some distance about the scow was covered with water pumped out of the hold of the vessel.

Every opening on the deck of the lightship is swathed in canvass. The decks and woodwork of the ship, immaculate before she sank, are now grimy and mud-stained. The woodwork on the vessel will have to be redecorated.

The picture shows the lightship as it appeared above the water this morning while pumping operations were going on. The stern of the vessel was out of the water about ten feet.
