- Launch of an Elegant Steamship at Bay City
Special Dispatch to The Detroit Free Press
BAY CITY, June 20.
From Captain James Davison's shipyard this afternoon was launched a new double-decked steamship, the James Davidson, said to be the finest specimen of naval architecture ever built in the West. Her dimensions are: length of keel, 226 feet; length over all, 241 feet; breadth of beam 27 1-2 feet; depth of lower hold, thirteen feet; depth between decks, eight feet; measurement, 1,464 tons. The rudder, stern-post and shoe are of iron. The rooms for the officers and crew are large and commodious. The ship is neatly fitted up and carries three masts, the main being 105 feet high, the mizzen 86. She is wire rigged and will carry a set of full sails. She will be towed to Detroit next week to receive her boilers and machinery, which will be of the most improved patterns. The engine is fifty inch bore, forty inch stroke. The wheel is ten feet. The entire cost is not less than $120,000.
