Five drowned at the Soo

Sault Ste Marie Mich., Sept. 26,

The lighter Monitor sank in Waiskai bay yesterday morning and the following of the crew were drowned:
William Corbiere
Joseph Prior
John Robeare
Emmanuel Robeare
John Foley.
The bodies of the dead men were recovered. All of them, with the exception of Foley, whose home was in Bay City, were residents of the Soo. The Monitor had just finished lightering about 350 tons of iron ore from the schooner Carrington, which was aground east of Point Iroquois, and was being towed to a sheltered position in the bay by a tug.

Capt. W. R. Smith of the Monitor was at the wheel and a watchman was on deck at the time. Ten of the crew were asleep below. A creaking noise was heard and the ship began to settle at the bow. She went to the bottom so quickly that the captain only had time to kick in the window of the cabin and knock upon it to arouse the sleeping men before the craft went down. Five men escaped the last one having to swim for his life.
