- Crew Escape burning ship
Ogemaw is destroyed in St. Clair RiverWhile the small wooden steamer Ogemaw was in its way up the St. Clair River, just a short distance from Tashmoo park Detroit, summer resort, shortly after 2 o’clock Sunday Morning, fire broke out near the engine room, and within a few minutes the boat was a mass of flames and smoke The 13 members of the crew escaped in lifeboats without injury.
The boat was approaching Grand Point on it’s way to Marine City, where she was to tie up for the winter, when the fire was discovered by a member of the crew. The alarm was spread immediately and the fire whistle was blown. Several members of the crew who were asleep were aroused and all started in to battle the fire.
The blaze made such rapid headway in the engine room and spread so fast that Captain T. W. Manuel of Port Huron and members of the crew were forced to take to the lifeboats.
